Advising ServicesThe college system at UCSD affords students the opportunity for personalized academic advising. A staff of trained professionals is available to assist students with academic planning, decision-making and the resolution of non-academic issues which might impede educational progress. The primary roles of academic counselors include informing students about university/college academic policies and procedures; assisting them in clarifying academic goals and objectives; advising students on their progress toward a degree; providing scheduling advice for students; and suggesting appropriate campus resources for personal and non-academic needs. The College advising staff includes a dean, an assistant dean, academic counselors, an intake counselor, two administrative support staff, peer counselors, administrative support student staff, a student intake clerk, and a student degree check clerk. Warren College advising services are available to students at the Warren College Administration Office, located on the first floor of the Computer Science and Engineering Building (EBU3) Room 1137. Students can get help in a number of ways including Walk-in Advising, an appointment with a counselor, intake advising, a scheduled degree check appointment, or through the Virtual Advising Center. Students may phone for walk-in hours or for a specific academic counselor's appointment schedule. Telephone advising is not available due to the heavy demand for advising services. Quarterly Services
Degree Check MeetingsGraduation degree checks assess progress toward a degree. Degree check meetings are held by advising staff throughout the year. During each meeting a computerized copy of the degree check is given to each attendee. NOTE: A Degree and Diploma Application must be filed as a pre-requisite to signing up for a degree check session. During the one-hour sessions counselors go over General Education requirements and discuss any problems or concerns you may have. The session will provide the opportunity to guarantee that there are no administrative errors on your transcript; for example, courses from other colleges that have not been properly transferred or petitioned. HOWEVER, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to check with your major department to be sure you have fulfilled all your major requirements. To sign up for a Degree Check meeting, contact the front desk by dropping in to Warren Advising Office or by calling (858) 534-4350 to reserve a space for the following week. It is best to call early in the morning as these sessions fill up fast, particularly during winter and spring quarters. Help DeskEither the front desk program assistant or the intake counselor can help you with any general questions or requests, i.e., turning in forms, requesting unofficial transcripts, filling out student inquiry forms, etc. Individual AppointmentsDuring the academic year, appointments with an academic counselor are booked one week in advance. The student's file is pulled and reviewed relative to specific questions or concerns. To make an individual appointment, contact the front desk at (858) 534-4350, preferably on Monday to reserve a space for the following week. It is best to call early in the morning as these sessions fill up quickly. No individual appointments are scheduled during the summer. Pre-Enrollment AdvisingOne week is set aside each quarter to answer any questions students may have as they are preparing to enroll in the next quarter's classes. Students are seen by an academic advisor on a first-come, first-served basis after signing in electronically at the Walk-in Advising terminal in the Warren Advising lobby. Please see Academic Success Workshops for the dates set aside for Freshman Advising Week and Transfer Advising Week. Walk-in AdvisingWalk-in Advising is for students with general questions or concerns but who may need more individual attention than the frontdesk can provide. Students are seen by an academic advisor on a first-come, first-served basis after signing in electronically at the Walk-in Advising terminal in the Warren Advising lobby. Written InquiriesLog on to the Virtual Advising Center and send an online inquiry. You will receive a response within 48 hours, via UCSD email, once your question has been answered.
