Freshman Scholars Seminar (WARR 11A and 11B)

First year students may fulfill the Warren writing requirement by enrolling in Warren 11A in the Fall quarter and Warren 11B in the Winter quarter. This sequence is taught by a university faculty member.  The seminar sequence helps students develop critical thinking, reading, and writing skills that are crucial for academic success at the undergraduate and graduate level. Coursework and presentations by faculty guest speakers relate to a general theme. The seminars are limited to a maximum of 20 students to allow for more individualized instruction. There will be brief weekly reading assignments, and all writing assignments will reflect the theme. Students can expect to benefit from sessions with undergraduate discussion leaders in addition to class meetings.

The theme for 2007-2008 is "Truth and Beauty ." Dr. Madeleine Picciotto, Lecturer in the Warren Writing Program, is the instructor for the Scholars Seminar. For more information on Dr. Picciotto, please visit her website at http://members.dslextreme.com/users/madpicciotto. She may also be reached via email at mpicciotto@ucsd.edu. In addition to regular class intruction, the seminars will feature distinguished guest lecturers who will speak from a variety of academic perspectives around the general theme. Lectures are interactive, and students are encouraged to engage in rigorous dialogue with the professor and with guest speakers. Informal activities with speakers and faculty will be offered on a regular basis.
