Ethics & Society

Two Non-Contiguous Programs of Concentration or Area Studies
Programs of Concentration (PofCs)
Two Programs of Concentration (PofCs) are required. Each must contain six, 4-unit courses (total of 24 units), at least three of which must be upper-division (courses numbered 100-199). Lower-division courses in PofCs may overlap with lower-division major courses. NO overlap is allowed in the upper-division courses. Note: Your PofCs must be non-contiguous to your major and to each other.
Students pursuing B.S. majors in Biology, Chemistry, Cognitive Science, Earth Sciences, Management Science, Physics, and Psychology are required to complete two PofCs.

Area Studies (A/S)
For Engineering, B.S. only - Two Area Studies are required. Each must contain three, 4-unit courses (total of 12 units), at least one of which must be upper-division. Note: Both Area Studies must be noncontiguous to the major and to each other.
Note: A Departmental Minor may be used in lieu of a Program of Concentration or Area Study. When used in this way, the Minor must be non-contiguous to the Major and the other Program of Concentration or Area Study. There may be no overlap with the major or the upper-division level course. Cultural Diversity
Cultural Diversity in U.S. Society is a UC requirement and may overlap with any other requirements including: the Major, Programs of Concentration, Area Studies, or Minor. The course content to fulfill this requirement must represent cultural diversity within the U.S. Transfer courses must be specifically approved for Cultural Diversity.
