UC, UCSD, and Warren College Writing Requirements

UC students throughout the state system are not allowed to enroll in any university writing courses until they have fulfilled the UC Entry-Level Writing Requirement (formerly known as the Subject A Requirement). For information on this requirement and on the various ways it can be fulfilled, go to http://subjecta.ucsd.edu/whatIs.html.

All UC campuses require at least one term of instruction in writing beyond the Entry-Level Writing Requirement. At UCSD, two quarters of writing-intensive instruction are required in each college’s core program. Consistency in amount of writing (8000 words, or roughly 30 pages per quarter) is mandated across all UCSD college writing courses. For a comparison of writing requirements and course offerings in the various UCSD colleges and in all UC writing programs system-wide, go to http://ucwrite.org/.

In Warren College, Warren Writing 10A and 10B must be completed within four quarters (following successful completion of the UC Entry-Level Writing Requirement). As of Fall Quarter 2000, all new and continuing students are required to complete Warren Writing courses only at UCSD.

According to policy set by the UCSD Academic Senate, “a student may register in an upper division course only if the student has satisfactorily completed the writing requirement of his or her college or has obtained the consent of the instructor of the upper division course. This requirement is waived for a student who has been admitted as a transfer student and has not completed three quarters of residence at UCSD.”
