Academic Argumentation
Argumentation is central to academic work; scholars and scientists are expected to support their conclusions with sound reasons and compelling evidence. Informed arguments are also used outside of academia in public discourse about policy, politics, and law. Arguments are even needed in everyday life whenever one is challenged to justify one's opinions or back one's assertions with evidence.
All Warren students will learn how to analyze and construct arguments in the Warren Writing sequence, 10A & 10B. Entering freshmen are required to complete both Warren Writing courses at UC San Diego. The purpose of the sequence is to teach students, through intensive practice, to critically analyze arguments and write arguments drawing on primary and secondary sources. The curriculum will prepare students for work in a variety of academic fields.
In both 10A and 10B, students' writing is discussed by the class in a workshop setting. Instructors hold individual conferences with students during the quarter and provide written and oral comments on student work.
