Commuter Student Life

Commuter students comprise more than two-thirds of the entire UCSD population. These students often need services unique to the off-campus experience. Both UCSD and Warren College offer a broad spectrum of services and programs to involve students in educational opportunities both in and outside the classroom. In addition, the Warren Dean of Student Affairs’ staff is available to assist in a variety of ways to ensure a quality educational experience.

Active commuter involvement is an important part of the college experience. Studies have shown that students who are involved in co-curricular activities actually do better in school than those who are not involved. The range of activities at Warren and UCSD are diverse and flexible enough to accommodate a busy schedule.

Warren College Student Affairs

The Student Affairs Interns work with the Coordinator of Student Activities to develop programs and activities for the Warren College commuter population. Events such as movie nights, ski trips, breakfasts, and study breaks are some of the activities Student Affairs interns have developed. Watch for information on commuter activities, or contact the Student Affairs Interns at the Student Affairs Office (858) 534-4700 for more information. Feel free to email at wasainterns@ucsd.edu.

Warren Transfer & Commuter Commission (WTCC)

WTCC is charged with addressing the unique needs of transfer and commuter students as well as planning events and activities for the Warren College commuter population. WTCC is comprised of 10 members who are both elected and appointed (5 transfer students and 5 commuter students are selected during Spring and Fall quarter, and serve a one-year term.) The WTCC is funded through the Warren College Activities Fee managed by WCSC, and the group puts on a variety of events throughout the year. WTCC assists College transfer students in their transition to life at UCSD, and provides social opportunities for commuters to meet one another. Events have included orientation info sessions, BBQ’s, study breaks, socials, baseball games and Disneyland trips. For more information, call (858) 534-4731.

Student Government

There are two levels of student government at UCSD. The Associated Students (ASUCSD) represents the campus as a whole, and Warren College Student Council (WCSC) serves our college community. Elections are held in the spring, and interested students are recruited throughout the year to serve on the many boards, commissions, committees, and task forces that exist.

All-Campus Commuter Board (ACCB)

Living off campus and interested in planning FREE activities for all commuter students? Motivated to make a difference in solving problems commuters face daily? ACCB plays two major roles in the UCSD community: programming and advocacy. Email ideas, comments, or to find out more information about ACCB meeting times, email commuter@ucsd.edu.

All-Campus Transfer Association (ACTA)

ACTA is designed to serve transfer student needs. ACTA serves as a blanket organization, working with other transfer services and organizations to provide transfer students with vital transfer-specific information, social events, a sense of belonging at UCSD, and a voice on the Associated Student Council. ACTA is also serves as a medium to get involved at UCSD in a variety of ways. For more information, see ACTA.

UCSD Commuter Student Services/Off-Campus Housing Office

The Commuter Student Services Office can assist you in making UCSD your “home away from home.” They’re located in the Student Center, Building A, 2nd Floor, Suite 200 (above the Bike Shop.) The Office sponsors quarterly events, such as BBQ’s, free food give-aways and final exam breaks. Students may pick up a Commuter Resource Guide, which provides information every commuter student should know (such as where to find study space, commuter lounges, computer labs and their hours, transit maps… even motorist assistance!) The Off-Campus Housing staff receives and maintains up-to-date rental listings from various landlords and homeowners in the community. They also provide samples of tenant-landlord forms, rental agreements and local rental rate information. Online housing listings and message boards are also available. For more information, UCSD Commuter Connection, Commuter Student Services, or call (858) 534-3670.

Non-resident Dining Plan

Commuter students, faculty and staff are now able to enjoy the convenience of UCSD Dining Dollars, which may be purchased at the Dining Plan Office (Revelle College.) And earn a bonus… For every $250 of Dining Dollars, participants receive an extra $25 of buying power at any UCSD Dining Services location. Learn more at http://hds.ucsd.edu/diningplan.

Childcare

The UCSD Early Childhood Education Center is open to the children of UCSD students, staff, and faculty. There is a limited amount of subsidy available for eligible students and entry level staff. The goal of the Center is to provide a meaningful experience for children 3 months to 5 years of age. The program offers a child-initiated curriculum that promotes the individual person and a sense of community. Also, the Center’s Infant/Toddler Referral Program provides information about selecting quality child care and assists parents in locating child care within our network of family home day care providers. For information and/or a wait list application, call (858) 534-2768. The UCSD’s Women’s Center provides study space and an area for children to play (under parental supervision.)

Commuter Lounges

Commuter Lounges offer a place to relax, meet people, and study. Several locations on campus are designed specifically for commuters. They are the Commuter Lounge (Blake Hall, Revelle), the Cloud’s Rest (next to MOM, Muir), the Center for the People (Thurgood Marshall), and the Lounge (second floor, Price Center). Warren’s Student Lounge is on the first floor of the Computer Science and Engineering Building. Some lounges are open until late evening; check each lounge for specific hours. In addition, there are game rooms at the Price Center, Muir, Revelle, and Warren Student Activities Center.

Lockers

Warren commuter lockers are available and are located at the Warren Student Activities Center and at McGill Hall on the Muir College campus. They may be rented by contacting the Warren College Student Affairs office. Students must provide their own locks.
