End Of Year Awards & Opportunities

Earl Warren College, in partnership with a number of UC San Diego departments and organizations, presents several awards to students who show dedication to their studies and a commitment to the activities and mission of Warren College. Students are encouraged to apply for or nominate others for the following awards and opportunities:

Apply to be the 2024 Warren College Commencement Student Speaker

Warren College Commencement Student Speaker - Submissions Due April 21, 2024 at midnight

Each year, Warren College selects a student speaker for the Commencement ceremony. Interested Warren College students are invited to apply and audition for the role of student speaker.

To apply, submit a written copy of your speech via e-mail to Warren College Student Affairs at warrendean@ucsd.edu. The allotted time for the speech is 3‐5 minutes. A panel of faculty, staff, and students will review applications and invite final candidates to present their proposed speech in person. Submissions must include:

  • Applicant's full name
  • PID
  • Phone number

Requirements

  • Must be an Earl Warren College Student in good academic standing
  • Must file for your degree/graduation and plan to participate in the June 2024 Commencement

Awards for Graduating Seniors

The Steven Adler Award for Public Service  - Application Due April 21, 2024 at midnight

The Steven Adler Award for Public Service will be awarded to the graduating Warren College student who has demonstrated significant participation in public service. The student selected for this award will receive a $250 award and participate in the Warren College Commencement.

Qualifications:

  • Must be an Earl Warren College Student in good academic standing
  • Graduating Senior Eligible (135+ units completed) and Intending to participate in the 2024 College Commencement Ceremony
  • Demonstrate distinction in public service during undergraduate career and specific plans to pursue employment or graduate studies in public service upon graduation


Outstanding Senior Award - Application Due April 21, 2024 at midnight

Each year the UCSD Alumni Association presents this award to an outstanding senior from each of the University's undergraduate colleges.  The student selected for this award will receive a $500 award and participate in the Warren College Commencement.

Qualifications:

  • Must be an Earl Warren College Student in good academic standing
  • Graduating Senior Eligible (135+ units completed) and Intending to participate in the 2024 College Commencement Ceremony
  • Exceptional academic achievement
  • Outstanding contribution to the campus community through active involvement with the College and the university
  • Demonstrated leadership

Awards and Scholarships for Continuing Students

Oceanids Service & Leadership Award - Application Due April 21, 2024 at midnight

This award is presented annually by the Oceanids, one of the longest running social and service organizations at UCSD. The Oceanids Service and Leadership Award recognizes outstanding service to the UCSD campus community, on either the college or campus-wide level. The student selected for this award will receive a $1000 cash award and be recognized at the Warren College Student Leadership Celebration.

Qualifications:

  • Must be an Earl Warren College Student in good academic standing
  • Junior standing and/or 90-134 credits completed by Winter Quarter prior to final year at UC San Diego
  • Demonstrated service to the campus through significant participation in student governance, student organizations, work on campus advisory boards, etc.


Claire Palmer Award - Application Due April 21, 2024 at midnight

The Claire L. Palmer Distinguished Excellence in Service Award recognizes a student who has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the overall growth and development of the residential community at Warren. This tradition at Warren College honors the legacy of longtime Director of Residence Life Claire L. Palmer. The student selected for this award will be recognized at the Warren College Student Leadership Celebration.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a continuing Earl Warren College Student in good academic standing


Erik Ward Scholarship - Application Due April 21, 2024 at midnight

Erik Ward was the founder of the student organization Warren Transfer Commuter Commission (WTCC) as well as an Associated Students senator and president of Warren College Student Council. He graduated cum laude in 2007 with an Economics (Management Science) major and Programs of Concentration in Japanese Studies and Mathematics. His untimely passing in 2019 affected many members of the UC San Diego Warren College alumni community and he is missed greatly. The student selected for this award will receive a $200 award and be recognized at the Warren College Student Leadership Celebration.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a continuing Earl Warren College Student in good academic standing
  • Must be either a Transfer student or Commuter student (for the current academic year)

Additional Awards Internally Decided

JK Wood Award - No Deadline (Internally Decided)

Kevin Wood served as Resident Dean of Warren College from 1986 to1992. He played a pivotal role in the planning and expansion of the Warren Residential Community. Kevin was noted for volunteering his time to several groups in the San Diego community and encouraged others to help those in need. Through his generosity he touched the lives of all who knew him. Please use the following link to read more about Kevin's life and legacy

Qualifications and Application Information:

  • Must be a continuing Earl Warren College Student in good academic standing
  • There is no application for this award. Students are nominated by an internal committee in Residential Life.
  • The award is given to an individual that has shown outstanding dedication to the Warren College, UCSD and the greater San Diego community. 

 


Dean of Academic Advising Award - No Deadline (Internally Decided)

The student selected for this award will receive a $200 award and be recognized at the Warren College Student Leadership Celebration.

Qualifications:

  • Must be an Earl Warren College Student in good academic standing
  • Graduating Senior Eligible (135+ units completed) and Intending to participate in the 2024 College Commencement Ceremony
  • Demonstrate exceptional academic support to Warren College students

Dean of Student Affairs Award - No Deadline (Internally Decided)

The student selected for this award will receive a $200 award and be recognized at the Warren College Student Leadership Celebration.

Qualifications:

  • Must be an Earl Warren College Student in good academic standing
  • Graduating Senior Eligible (135+ units completed) and Intending to participate in the 2024 College Commencement Ceremony
  • Demonstrate outstanding service to Warren College Student Life

Warren College Student Council Scholarships

Ben Sumner Memorial Scholarship  - Application Due April 21, 2024 at midnight

Ben Sumner was a respected and loved member of the Warren Community before his untimely passing in March 2006. During his tenure in Warren College, Ben served his fellow students admirably as the freshman Senator and then as the website coordinator for Warren College Student Council. He also served as the Chief of Staff to the Associated Students Vice President of Academic Affairs. Along with his commitment to leadership, Ben maintained an extremely high GPA with a double major in Computer Science and Philosophy. His drive for excellence in both leadership and scholarship are embodied in this scholarship that is awarded annually to one Warren student who displays excellence in academics, co-curricular activities, and service to the Warren community and outside communities. The student selected for this award will receive a $250 award and be recognized at the Warren College Student Leadership Celebration.

Qualifications:

  • Must be an Earl Warren College Student in good academic standing
  • Must have completed a minimum of 90 units (Junior standing) by the end of Winter Quarter

Warren College Student Council Leadership Scholarship  - Application Due April 21, 2024 at midnight

The WCSC Leadership Scholarship was established to provide students with monetary aid in their collegiate efforts. This scholarship is given on a yearly basis and is awarded to one student based on excellence in academics, co-curricular activities, and service to the Warren and/or outside communities. The student selected for this award will receive a $250 award and be recognized at the Warren College Student Leadership Celebration.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a continuing Earl Warren College Student in good academic standing
  • Junior standing and/or 90-134 credits completed by Winter Quarter prior to final year at UC San Diego
